The term spa derives from the name of the Belgian city of Spa. This name is a transformation of the ancient Roman name of the area Aquae Spadanae. The name becomes generic in the 16th century when the first English resort for drinking curative mineral water was called the English Spa by Dr Timothy Bright. Over time, the term began to refer not only to drinking of mineral water, but also to bathing with mineral water in terms for treatment and curing of diseases. Nowadays along with the traditional use of the name, a new and quite different sense is implemented into the word spa. Spas are mainly complexes that offer beauty treatments and massages, rather than mineral water bathing or drinking. Spas are created basically everywhere, especially in the big cities, where people can use those services without the need to go to special locations to receive these kinds of treatments. Usually the modern day spas are an addition to beauty salons, or even replace them in certain activities, which way spas can exist as single and separate units. They are offering a large number of treatments and services like body massage, waxing, tanning, pedicure, manicure, facials, etc.
