Tips on Using a Curling Iron

Written by Cosmix School of Makeup Artistry

Want perfect curls? Use a curling iron. If only it was that simple. Nearly every woman has a curling iron, but not every woman knows how to use it properly. How do you get natural-looking curls? Do you need more than one size curling iron?

If you’re tired of bad hair days associated with your curling iron, it’s time to brush up on the basic techniques. Here are a few tips on the proper way to use a curling iron provided by one of the leading makeup artist schools, Cosmix Inc.

Size matters. There are many sizes of curling irons. It’s important to use the right size curling iron depending on the look you want to achieve. For small, springy curls, use a smaller barrel. A smaller curling iron can also be used to add volume to short or fine hair. Natural-looking curls can be created using a 1-inch curling iron, while large waves can be made using a 1.5-2 inch curling iron.

Prep properly. There are two major steps to preparing your hair for the curling iron. The first step is to dry your hair completely. The second step is to section it with clips. But the key is to part the hair using section sizes that match the size of the curling iron.

Know when to say no. There are times when you might not need the curling iron to achieve the look you want, even if you want to create curls. If you want soft curl styling, for example, consider using hot rollers instead of a curling iron. Do you want wavy hair? Consider using a flat iron that comes in different shapes designed to wave hair. You can take makeup classes to learn more about hair and makeup tips at Cosmix Inc.
